SWGAV Captains Report 2025

This is my second year as captain of the Senior Women’s Golf and I’m still learning.

I have had some anxious moments usually on the Sunday night or Monday morning before the game.

February.

Eastwood was our first game for 2025 unfortunately due to severe weather conditions the game was cancelled. We had 61 members enrolled to play and we were eager to get out for our first game, but it wasn’t to be.

March.

Our March game was down at the picturesque course at Mornington. The numbers were low we only had 43 entries. Our members enjoyed an early morning cuppa and biscuits provided by Glenis Foxall at her own expense. Thank you again Glenis.

April.

We had 63 ladies play at Cranbourne Golf course. The course was in good shape and nice wide fairways. Some concern about the lunch and the informal room we were given. These concerns were passed on to Cranbourne Event Manager.

May.

Our numbers are on the increase; 83 members enjoyed the course at Southern Golf.

The after-game lunch was enjoyed by most. Although with the increased numbers some groups were coming in quite late, 5 hrs. which held up both the lunch and the results, making it a very long day.

August.

The Beverly Mannix Trophy, held at Ranfurlie Golf Course had 68 entries.

This course added to my headache because they requested, I take the bookings for the carts. The carts were limited and not all players who were eligible were able to play.

The lunch was well catered for; we were given a choice of Roast of the day or Fish and Chips. A bit different for this special day.

Our Life Member Beverly Mannix presented the trophy to the winners on the day. Jackie Judd and Maree Renowden

September.

We played at Keysborough with 75 ladies. This game posed a few problems for the Vice Captain Anne Briner and me. We redid the draw several times then on the Sunday afternoon before the game we were told we only had half the course. Their members were sharing the course with us. The draw was redone late Sunday night.Lunch was pleasant, and the course was in excellent condition.

October.

The numbers were up again for our next game Centenary Park. Once we had 80 ladies, the entries were closed.

2024 saw Centenary Park game cancelled due to bad weather conditions, so it was great to be able to get back there in 2025.

We would like to thank Sue Mitchelhill for her hard work both before and especially after the game, having to manually do the cards. Thank you to all the Centenary Park Ladies they did an amazing job on the day, providing excellent Lunch. Our SWGAV Life Member Bev Mannix came along for lunch and a chat.

November.

Box Hill Silver Salver and the AGM Once again, the decision to close the entries early had to be made, the numbers reached 96 two weeks after opening the game. A waiting list was started, and they were quickly slotted into the draw. Good luck to all today.

I would like to thank the committee for all their help, guidance and encouragement.

I would like to especially thank my Vice Captain Anne Briner, Anne has been my right-hand lady throughout 2025, she picks up my mistakes, makes great suggestions and sorts the draw so most members are happy. Every game has posed a challenge this year, from the lack of communication from some of the courses, the limited number of carts available at courses, some teams coming in over 5 hrs. and the constant changes we have had to make to the draw. Lastly, I would like to thank all the SWGAV members, I am looking forward the courses we will be playing throughout 2026.

WELCOME SPEECH – AGM Presidents Report 2024

Good Afternoon Ladies and welcome to our 54th AGM and end of year Christmas luncheon.

It is really great to see so many happy faces.....those of us that played fabulous golf today and those that have come to join us for lunch.

A special welcome to our life member, Bev Mannix. Special guest Merrell (Bev’s daughter). Welcome to our past Captains and Presidents and Committee Members that are here today.

We also welcome another new member joining us today for her first game. Simone Ward. (Box Hill) I hope you enjoyed your game today.

It would be very remiss of me if I did not thank a few people.

A very big thank-you, to all the ladies, that have contributed to making today possible. Not only today but every game day, they ensure you get to play golf at many amazing courses.

Throughout the year we have had many issues to overcome and find solutions too, so that you get to play your game with the least amount of disruptions to your day. As an example ... at the last minute, the venue / course has been double booked. That means, at the 100th hour we have had to find another venue. Over the year, there has been issues with not enough carts, changes to the lunch menu. Changes in costs. Not to mention poor weather and we had to cancel the game. There were many last minute changes to our daily playing sheet, cancellations or additions. These are just a few things the committee have had to deal with.

I won’t list the committee individually by name but what I will say is....

A very big thankyou to you all. We would not have had a wonderful year of golf if it wasn’t for your hard work. On behalf of all of us, Thankyou very much.

Thank-you to Box Hill GC, for today and their support throughout the year. Thank-you to the pro shop, the bar staff and the kitchen staff and the groundsmen, for a job very well done.

I would like to acknowledge Jan Cousland. Jan is not here today, as she is travelling overseas. Sadly Jan is stepping down from the committee after many years of service. Over that time Jan has held several positions, all of which she has performed with the utmost professionalism. Jan has been a wealth of information and will be missed. Luckily, Jan will be continuing to play seniors so she is not quite off the hook yet!! Jan, thank you for your support and friendship.

Last but not least, thank-you, to our Captain (Julie Hadj) for her never ending work.

It is very much appreciated by all. What a fantastic job everyone has done. THANKYOU

Today is the 11 Nov (Remembrance Day), and I would like to take a moment to reflect on all of our war heroes that fought for us, many of which lost their lives in order that we get to live a better life in a wonderful country.

Lest we forget.

Enjoy the rest of day and on behalf of myself, our Captain and the Committee have a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your family and friends.

We look forward to seeing you at our next game, 3rd Feb, 2025 at Eastwood golf club. Details will be on the website.

SWGAV Captains Report 2024

Taking over the captain's role at the beginning of 2024 I often wondered what I had got myself into. Thankfully Jenny Bramich was a great mentor and helped me along the way.

SWGAV first game was held in February at Rosanna, 60 ladies played on a very interesting course. The day started with a few minor problems, no lights and score card swere not printed, a great start to my year as Captain.

March game was held at the very picturesque course Mornington. The Pro Shop were very helpful with the significant changes that had to be made prior to Tee off. 51 ladies played the challenging course on the day.

April, Cranbourne we had 54 ladies play the course and navigated the bunkers well seeing that they were popping up everywhere. A lovely lunch was enjoyed by the ladies and the course was in good condition. We look forward to coming back in 2025 before the course is due to close.

May, Rossdale. 50 ladies played golf on what turned out to be a lovely day for golf. Unfortunately, an issue with carts being over booked and last-minute changes were made to accommodate some players.

August Beverly Mannix Trophy Day was held at Patterson River Golf Course 54 women played and 57 enjoyed a wonderful lunch. The game was very competitive on a good course and the Winners of the Beverley Mannix trophy Jan Crosby and Coralie Higgins from Glen Waverley on 43 pts. Beverley presented the Trophy to the ladies along with her gift to the winners.

September Centenary Park. Unfortunately, the game was cancelled due to extreme weather conditions. Thank you to Maree, Michelle and all the Centenary Park members for all their organisation prior to the day being cancelled.

October Churchill Waverley, disappointingly we only had 34 ladies playing on the day. The weather was cold and windy with a few showers thrown in the mix. Due to the numbers, we had a Two Tee start the course was long, but we still had some good results.

November Box Hill Silver Salver good luck to the 56 ladies that are playing in our last game for 2024. At this stage I would like to thank Our President Robyn Mackwell and the committee for their friendship, guidance and most of all their encouragement through 2024.Thank you to Jenny Bramich for helping with the submissions, making my job easier when doing the draw and Barb Muller for organising the courses, the catering and the costings for the year in advance.

Being captain in 2024 has been a learning experience and at times I felt like I was floundering. I would like to thank all the members of the SWGAV who have made me feel welcome and have made my position easier over the past few months.

Thank you,

Julie Hadj
